When night came, the most powerful of them, two formidable guns named “the Devil” and “the Devil’s Mother”, spewed long jets of incandescent slime into the darkness, accompanied by an obscene roar that made moan the inhabitants holed up in their beds, because each new discharge, each new impact announced that soon resistance would give way under the onslaught of these insatiable monsters and that the innocent city would be brutally taken and delivered body and soul to the ravages of the episcopal thugs.”
