“Tales of terrifying encounters were spread from town to town, told in lowered voices so as not to frighten the children, like that of the peasant attacked by a horned beast on a deserted road one winter evening while returning from the market. The man had survived this disconcerting attack, but his ordeal had rendered him mute and those who had come to his aid were reduced to feverish conjectures, supported by the insane shape of his wounds, on the nature of the entity which had assaulted.”

“The doors of a fundamentally alien Elsewhere had been forced open and rumours of impossible, blasphemous creatures, which until then had lived confined in the imagination of medieval manuscripts, now spread freely, carried on the wings of leaflets printed throughout Europe.”

“Light only shines in darkness”
Inspired by true events from the early Renaissance, Project M is a graphic story in the making that exposes how a society’s prejudices and anxieties can, under extraordinary stresses and circumstances, breed true monsters.

“Coming from the four corners of the country, a pack of overheated cannons surrounded the besieged city and shelled it without pause. When night came, the most powerful of them, two formidable guns named “the Devil” and “the Devil’s Mother”, spewed long jets of incandescent slime into the darkness, accompanied by an obscene roar that made moan the inhabitants holed up in their beds, because each new discharge, each new impact announced that soon resistance would give way under the onslaught of these insatiable monsters and that the innocent city would be brutally taken and delivered body and soul to the ravages of the episcopal thugs.”

“Brides for one night or for a lifetime, they are as ferocious and faithful as the frightening mastiffs who guard their children, born in the straw and mud of bivouacs, and their fertile bellies, like a Europe in tumult, are relentlessly surveyed by armies of gleaming men, proud and vain like fighting cocks, who leave their seed there before going to confront each other and be mutilated in the service of princes.”

“The world, in which from time immemorial the sacred had permeated every chink of the profane and vice versa, was falling apart, leaving us in dire need of new miracles.”

“I see a new world, divided into two enemy camps, two armies of fanatics goaded by new prophets, thirsty by lust and corrupted by power. I see a white city on the hill, lit by the glow of the pyres, smothered by black clouds, plundered, and desecrated by idiotic and rambling hordes.” From the testimony of N.N.
